One of the Twelve Apostles, Saint Andrew wanted to die a martyr to prove how much he loved Our Lord. His life of martyrdom promotes sacrifice and humility.
It has been said that upon his request St. Andrew was crucified on an x-shaped cross (crux decussata), he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross on which Christ was crucified. The x-shape cross has become an iconographic symbol for Saint Andrew and his martyrdom.
